SONS OF GUNS

A new watch made from melted illegal firearms

A lot of fashion designers blather on about ‘making a statement’. But this watch, made from illegal firearms, actually does…

It’s fair to say that the recent surge in gun and knife crime has left everyone reeling. But what can we actually do about it? TRIWA, a Swedish fashion brand, has come up with neat little idea: making Triwa watches out of illegal firearms.

Currently, the guns are retrieved from conflict torn societies – think banana republics rather than Birmingham. But that could change as the company begins mass-production. The firearms are melted down into steel bars in El Salvador, which are then turned into powder to make 36L Stainless Steel, before finally being molded into watch cases.

Triwa x Humanium Metal watch

The TRIWA X Humanium timepieces are designed to be part of an activist movement to “create fresh metal as a solution to gun-related problems,” says Triwa co-founder Ludvig Scheja. The watches have even won the support of the Dalai Lama, a noted horologist who, slightly bizarrely, is said to own 15 luxury Rolex’s.

A limited number of TRIWA x Humanium watches are available to order on Kickstarter, but the company’s long term goal is to fight a “global epidemic consisting of over 500 million illegal firearms across the world.”

Maybe you want a symbolic fashion accessory that makes a stand against violence? Or, maybe you just want to wear a gun around your wrist? Either way, you’ll be turning one of the world’s most destructive forces into something beneficial.
